Manjula Chellur is new chief justice of Bombay high court
The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Justice Manjula Chellur as the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. Justice Chellur, who is currently the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, will take charge of Bombay High Court on or before August 24, 2016. She replaces CJ Dhirendra Hiralal Waghela who retired on August 10. He hailed from Gujarat and was appointed Bombay HC CJ on February 15 this year being transferred as CJ from Orissa HC. This will be the second time when the Bombay High Court has a woman judge as the Chief Justice, the first being Justice Sujata Manohar, who served as Chief Justice in 1994.
Manjula, born in December 1955 at Bellary in Karnataka, got a law degree in 1977. She joined the Karnataka judicial service as the district judge in 1988 after ten years as a lawyer. She was appointed as the first woman judge of Karnataka High Court, Bangalore, in February 2000. She became the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in November 2011 and was sworn-in as the Chief Justice on September 26, 2012. Her transfer to Calcutta HC as a CJ was in August 2014. She is scheduled to retire as CJ in 2017.
