Sania-Prarthana crash out of women's doubles
i. Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare crashed out of women’s doubles event at the Rio 2016 Olmypics in the first round. The Indian pairing lost 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 to Chinese pairing of Shuai Zhang and Shuai Peng.
ii. Sania and Prarthana were defeated 6-7 (6), 7-5, 5-7. 
iii. Leander Paes-Rohan Bopanna also crashed out of the men's doubles after losing straight sets 4-6, 6-7.



Former champion Venus Williams knocked out
i. Former Olympic champion Venus Williams (American) was eliminated in the first round at the Rio Games.
ii. Williams was defeated 4-6 6-3 7-6(5) by Belgian's Kirsten Flipkens.
iii. Former world No.1 Ana Ivanovic also lost 2-6 6-1 6-2 to world No. 12 Carla Suarez Navarro.

Indian hockey team scores first win in Olympics in 12 years
i. The Indian hockey team made Olympic history by winning their first match in the Rio 2016 Games over Ireland.
ii. In a Group B match, India beat Ireland 3-2.
iii. Drag-flickers VR Raghunath (15th minute) and Rupinder (27th, 49th) scored the goals for India.


Dattu Baban Bhokanal enters quarter-finals in rowing
i. Indian rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal entered the quarter-finals of the Men's Single Sculls after finishing 3rd in the qualifying round.
ii. Bhokanal finished the 2000m race with a timing of 7:21.67s.
iii. Angel Fournier Rodriguez of Cuba (7:06.89s) and Mexico's Juan Carlos Cabrera (7:08.27s) were first and 2nd respectively.

Atanu Das shines, female archers falter on mixed day for India
i. India's star archer Deepika Kumari finished at a poor 20th rank with a score of 640 out of 720.
ii. Atanu Das finished at a creditable 5th rank in the individual section.
iii. Koreans women archers Choi Misun, Chang Hye Jin and Ki Bo Bae made it top three.


Juan Martin del Potro knocks out Novak Djokovic
i. World number one Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was dumped out of Rio Games in the first round by Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro.
ii. Del Potro, former U.S Open champion is ranked 145 in the world.
iii. Porto secured a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win against Djokovic.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar qualifies for vault finals
i. Dipa Karmakar (Indian), who is India's first woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics, managed to perform her much-appreciated 'Produnova' vault cleanly.
ii. She has secured 14.850 points after two attempts and has qualified for finals. 
iii. Dipa has ended 6th after the 3rd of five sub-divisions.



India draw 2-2 with Japan in Rio
i. India women's hockey team draw 2-2 with Japan in the Rio 2016 opener in a pool B match.
ii. Rani Rampal and Lilima Minz hit goals for India. 
iii. The team has qualified for the Olympics after a gap of 36 years.


Women's archery team enter Quarters
i. Indian women's archery team entered the quarter-finals of the recurve event. 
ii. The trio of Deepika, Laxmirani Majhi and Bombayla beat Colombia 5-3.
iii. Indian women will face Russian Federation in the quarterfinal.




Heena Sidhu crashes out of 10m Air Pistol event
i. Indian star shooter Heena Sidhu failed to qualify for the final of Women's 10m Air Pistol event on the second day of the Rio Olympics.
ii. Sidhu crashed out of the event with a score of 380 to finish 14th. 
iii. Only the top 8 qualify for the final.
