In remote tribal areas of Chhattisgarh, where development is still news, women suffer greatly due to lack of infrastructure and healthcare facilities, especially during pregnancy. In one such district of Narayanpur, however, things are changing.
Using ingenious technology, Ajay Trakeroo, a resident of the area, has come up with a unique motorbike ambulance which ferries on these dusty and rugged tracks to ensure villagers, especially women, reach primary healthcare centres in times of dire emergency.
“These ambulances have been mobilised with the support of the social welfare organisations like UNCIEF and social workers. Motorbike ambulances can go to remote villages in the interiors of the forests here,” Ajay told India Today.
The mini ambulance has a side-carriage which is covered with cloth. The makeshift ambulance also has a siren and a first-aid kit to assist villagers during times of need. Ajay, using his driving and manoeuvring skills on these rugged roads, has single-handedly saved the lives of over 200 pregnant women, among other villagers.
These ambulances have seen great success in African countries and have instantly found home in the forests of Chhattisgarh. Ajay told TF Live, “Pregnant women are our main focus in the area as the mortality rate is high in this conflict-bound region of Chhattisgarh. With this experiment, we are trying to provide necessary health care to the pregnant women of this Maoist-affected tribal and hard-to-reach forest area.”
