New Zealand elects Bill English as new Prime Minister
New Zealand’s ruling National Party appointed the experienced Bill English as the country’s new prime minister taken office on 12 December 2016 by following resignation of his popular predecessor John Key.
State Services Minister Paula Bennett was named as deputy prime minister. Bill English was previously Deputy Prime Minister from 2008 to 2016. A farmer and public servant before entering politics, English was elected to parliament in 1990 as the National Party's candidate in the Wallace electorate.
