Buck up, cricketers because international cricket is entering a new phase. A new set of rules have been added to the rulebook of international cricket by ICC. These rules will be in action from 28 September 2017. The ICC has made an official announcement stating the facts for everyone.
ICC media has tweeted a video where ICC General Manager – Cricket, Geoff Allardice can be seen explaining the changes that ICC has made in International Cricket.
Here are the five new rules that will be followed from 28 September 2017 in International cricket.
1. Change In Bat’s Thickness.
The size of the bats will remain the same. However, an announcement has been made regarding a change in the thickness of the bat. The new dimensions of the bats will be; Width 108mm, Depth 67mm, and Edges 40 mm.
2. Run-out New Rules
Stating the new rule about the run-out, ICC said,
If a batsman is running or diving towards the crease with forward momentum, and has grounded his/her bat behind the popping crease but subsequently has lost contact with the ground at the time of the wickets being put down, the batsman will not be run out. The same interpretation will also apply for a batsman trying to regain his/her ground to avoid being stumped.
The rule further states that,
Boundary catches, airborne fielders making their first contact with the ball will need to have taken off from within the boundary, otherwise a boundary will be scored.
A batsman can also be declared out- caught, stumped or run out even if the ball bounces off the helmet worn by a fielder or wicketkeeper.
3. Decision Review System
As per the new decision review system rule, umpires call will not make the team lose any review. From now on if the umpire’s decision remains unaffected even after the review, the team will still have their chance to take the review another time.
4. No-Ball, Byes Or Leg Byes
Earlier the ball was allowed to bounce before reaching the batsman. However, the new rule suggests that if the ball bounces more than once before reaching the batsman, it will be called a no-ball.
If the ball goes off the pitch or gets intercepted by the fielder, the umpire will call it a no-ball.
Bye or leg-byes along with a no-ball will be scored separately. The bowler will have only one no-ball to put against his/her name and the rest will be scored as byes or leg-byes.
5. On-field Discipline
With this new rule, umpires get the authority to send the players off the field for creating any sort of indiscipline. ICC stated,
Threatening to assault an umpire, making inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with an umpire, physically assaulting a player or any other person and committing any other act of violence all constitute Level 4 offences.
