"A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy."
What will be your first reaction when you hear a statement like this one? It will obviously be agitation and resentment. The minute I read the story about this Indian woman at 'TheConversation.com' I was stunned at the mere thought of someone actually saying such brutal words.
All of us are aware of news about rape, molestation and sexual assaults against women. These incidents definitely scare the living hell out of us. But, have we ever analyzed what provokes culprits for committing such heinous crimes that can ruin someone's life or even kill her?
An Indian woman actually paid a visit to the cells where these victims are kept. She managed to ask them what made them do this sin that posed a serious threat to humanity?
We have all the answers that these rapists gave, and it will shock you to the level that you will question the existence of mankind.
Madhumita Pandey
According to her article on The conversation, she was 22 when she went to Tihar jail in New Delhi, India, for the very first time and there she met nearly 100 rape convicts. She interviewed them for her doctoral thesis at the Criminology Department of Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.
It was very thoughtful of her but what made her think about such a unique thing?
34,651 women reported being raped in India.
In 2013, much later after the 'Nirbhaya' gang rape in India in which a young, aspirational medical student was attacked on her way back home with a friend. This incident struck the chord of the entire Indian subcontinent. According to the reports of National Crime Records Bureau, 34,651 women were reported being raped in 2015.

Madhumita shared that...
She was stunned by the response that she received and it took no time for her to conclude that these rapists aren't humans. Indeed they are monsters. Most of the men she encountered and cross questioned were either uneducated, vulgar and only a handful of them had graduated.

What can be the reason of these acts?
I second Madhumita when she says that these men are just as ordinary as you and me but the problem lies in their upbringing and thought process. Most of them think of women as a material that can be used for sexual pleasure and then disposed off the way we dispose garbage.

Their idea of masculinity is opposite.
Men who commit such crimes often tend to think of themselves as the superior gender and women are gladly accepting the roles of portraying a submissive and victim. Why can't they take charge of their own safety and unite together to fight it out?
When the gang rape took place in Delhi (India). It was reported that a lot of passers by failed to acknowledge the fact that the girl who was raped is naked and someone is supposed to cover her body.
Men don't understand what consent is.
Pandey said that, "After you speak to [the rapists], it shocks you - these men have the power to make you feel sorry for them. As a woman that's not how you expect to feel. I would almost forget that these men have been convicted of raping a woman. In my experience, a lot of these men don't realize that what they've done is rape. They don't understand what consent is."
Oops! Did I just say SEX?
We have a very socially conservative attitude when it comes to sex and sex education. If you can do it regularly, why can't you speak about it?
Sex education is omitted in most school curriculums; legislators feel such topics could 'corrupt' youth and offend traditional values. "Parents won't even say the words like penis, vagina, rape or sex. If they can't get over that, how can they educate young boys or even girls?" Pandey asked.
Are excuses enough to justify this?
These men actually denied the occurrence of any sort of sexual activity between them and the victim. "There were only three or four who said we are repenting. Others had found a way to put their actions into some justification, neutralize, or blame action onto the victim," said Madhumita.
Can a man really say that?
One of the rapists was reported to have said that, "Yes I feel bad, I ruined her life. Now she is no longer a virgin, no one would marry her. I would accept her, I will marry her when I come out of jail." Do statements like this suffice the crime and the deed that has already been done?
Her idea behind visiting these rapists.
Madhumita hopes to publish her research in the coming months, she also said that, "They think, here comes another feminist. They assume a woman doing research like this will misrepresent men's ideas. Where do you begin with someone like that?"
We really hope for her work to get the much-deserved appreciation and want more and more men to read this because they need to know the fine line between YES and NO.
