Non-medical student Mahima Nagpal, daughter of a scrap dealer, emerged as the winner after battling numerous odds.
Nagpal is the academic 2016 topper in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class 12 results which were announced on Friday with 99.56% marks.
Her father Sanjiv Nagpal, is a scrap dealer who earns just Rs 10,000 a month, hardly enough to feed a family of four. Her mother Poonam Nagpal is a housewife.
Mahima used to devote 18 to 20 hours a day to her studies. She is a student of RS Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana.
She had received fee concession from her school and was confident that her hard work will be rewarding.
With aspirations to be an IAS officer, Mahima says her role model is her physics lecturer Sangeeta. “I never took any coaching. I believe self study is the best,” she says. She has a younger brother who studies in the same school.
Single mother driving force behind third-ranker
Riya, a student of RS Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, secured the third rank in the state results by scoring 98.67 %. Riya had lost her father at an early age. Her mother, a primary teacher at the same school, is the force beneath her wings.
She aspires to become an engineer and get admission in IIT Mumbai.
Sahil Midda, who scored 100 percent in the sports quota and emerged topper in this category is the son of the cycle puncture shop owner. A state-level baseball player, Sahil aspires to be a chartered accountant. He scored 90 percent in Class 10 . He belongs to the commerce stream. Sahil is a student of Teja Singh Swatanter Memorial Senior Secondary School, Shimla Puri, Ludhiana.
“I used to revise everything that was taught in school on the same day,” said Sahil , who suffered a fracture in his leg just before exams but managed to recover up brilliantly .
