Significance of Satyanarayan Katha

Satyanarayan Katha

Satyanarayan Katha is a story telling session about the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Satyanarayan is one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The Satyanarayan Katha is an auspicious Hindu puja performed on the important occasions of the family. Whether it is Marriage , house inauguration, child birth etc, this katha is performed to remove troubles and to achieve great success. It is said that by performing this Puja, we can please the Goddess Lakshmi, wife of Lord Vishnu.

Considered Auspicious to worship Lord Ganesha first

According to Hindus, it is considered auspicious to mark any occasion while conducting the Ganesh Pujan first. Same is done before starting the Satyanarayan Katha, when we chant mantras to mark the occasion --- After chanting the mantras, we offer flowers Laddoo to Lord Ganesh.

Navagraha Puja

After Ganesh pujan, the Navagraha Puja is performed (the Puja of the nine planets). The Puja is done so that we remain protected from the adverse effect of all the nine planets --- this is finally followed by Lord Vishnu’s Puja.

Placed At the top

The idol of Lord Vishnu puja is placed on a raised platform on a red cloth and the area is cleaned before that. A Prasad of rose petals and fruits is offered after which the story telling session commences.

Story of Lord Vishnu

The Katha narrates the story of Lord Vishnu and how praying to this Lord can get rid of all your problems. The Katha also leaves us with an important lesson of not leaving any work mid-way --- whether it a “Puja” of the Lord or your personal work --- doing so will invite a lot of suffering in your life. The Satyanarayan Katha’ teaches us about self-purification, self –surrender, and truth since ‘Satya’ means Truth, ‘Nar’ means Human Being and ‘Ayan ’is a place where truth resides’. Anyone who listens to the Katha will get the message of always speaking the truth.

It’s Important to have Prasad

After finishing the Katha, a Prasad of fruits and Panjiri is distributed. It is said that if we don’t eat the Prasad after the Puja, the Puja is rendered null and void. So make sure you have your Prasad after the Puja is complete.
